PEANUT ISLAND SNORKELING REEF

Diving & Snorkeling At Peanut Island In Palm Beach County, Florida

Peanut Island Snorkeling Reef - Copyrighted
The man-made reef at Peanut Island is home to hundreds of colorful fish.

Welcome to the Peanut Island Snorkeling Reef page.  Thank you for visiting.  This page contains pictures of the snorkeling reef area and information on the best times to visit.

One of the best places to snorkel in Palm Beach County can be found at Peanut Island.  This county park includes a protected snorkeling reef.  Hundreds of colorful fish inhabit the reef during the summer months.
Schools of bait fish sometimes seek protection in the cove.  Smaller fish like the rocks "inside" the cove.  Larger fish like the "outside" rocks.  Barracudas are generally seen on the outside, just beyond the reef.
You may also see stingrays, conchs or even a manatee in the dive reef area.  Remember that all living things on the reef are protected by law and can not be removed.

Note:  This page contains several high resolution, large size photographs.  As such this these  pictures may take extra time to download, especially with a dial-up internet connection.  If some pictures are missing, click your browser's "Refresh" button.

White Sand Beach - Copyrighted
The breakwater snorkeling reef is located on the south side of Peanut Island.  It's part of a small, protected cove with shallow waters and a white sand beach.
The "inside" cove area has a gently sloping sandy bottom.  It reaches a maximum depth of about 6 feet near the reef boulders.

One section of the dive reef is a rocky island.
This picture was taken standing on Peanut Island looking to the east.  The Lake Worth Inlet (aka The Palm Beach Inlet) is  seen behind the rocky reef island.
Sea life can easily come in the inlet and find shelter amongst the rocks at Peanut Island's snorkeling reef.

The other section of breakwater snorkel reef is a jetty that "doglegs left" out from Peanut Island near the old Coast Guard station.
The "outside the cove" portion of the reef has depth that vary from about 6 feet to about 8 feet.  The "outside" is vulnerable to large boat wakes, strong currents and busy boat traffic conditions.  Bring a dive flag.

FP&L Riviera Beach Power Plant - Copyrighted
The Peanut Island snorkeling reef is manmade.  It's constructed of large boulders.
FP&L's Riviera Beach Power Plant is seen in the background of this picture.

Clear blue water floods the reef on an incoming tide.
The best time to visit is from 2 hours before high tide at Lake Worth Inlet until 2 hours after high tide.  At low tide the water is brown and murky.

Beware of strong currents in this area, especially outside the protected cove.  Large ships travel in the deep channel next to the reef.  Recreational boat traffic is heavy in this area.  Wearing a life jacket and using a dive flag is advised if you plan t swim on the outside of the reef.

Snorkeling is just part of the fun that can be found on Peanut Island.  Click here to continue.
